Industry Training: Problems that business training can solve

Written by SeekLMS Correspondent on 25 October 2021

The famous car mogul and businessman Henry Ford was once asked why he trained his staff if after this they left, to which he replied: "What if I don't train them and they stay?"

And there is no more to say about it. Great wisdom emerges from this anecdote, which is the heart of the matter on how to transform a company towards prosperity from its human capital. Training is a process of learning or updating knowledge with the aim of developing new skills, or improving those already acquired, to use them as a tool to improve the personal and group performance of a company or organization.

Speaking in particular, it prepares the individual to face their work duties in a more versatile, objective, and informed manner. Modify, therefore, in a positive way, your attitude and aptitude.

The Four objectives of Industry Training are:

1.- To promote the integral development of individuals and consequently that of the company.

2.- Provide knowledge oriented to the best performance in the work occupation.

3.- Reduce work risks.

4.- Contribute to the improvement of productivity, quality, and competitiveness of companies.

Integral Development of Individuals:

With the word integral, we can intuit that it refers to “the whole”. That is, it is not enough for the person to be a renowned specialist or a scholar as regards their functions and/or work activities. It is not enough because, it could also be the case that the individual's behavior spoils personal relationships with the rest of their colleagues, causing the long-awaited teamwork never to take place. Therefore, training must be carried out not only in the technical field but also in the social and human aspects.

In such a way, having a good work environment, in which respect and collaboration prevail, is essential for both the company and each member of it to achieve its objectives.

A harmonious environment causes the motivation and improvement of its members. Regarding this, I have to mention that there are several topics that have been addressed for training in the human question and social coexistence, among which some stand out such as Integration of Teams works, Leadership, Organizational Development, Human Development, Women's development, etc.

On the other hand, there is also another type of compliance training, which has nothing to do with the specific technical training of each employee, nor with their attitudes, but rather with the complementing of their skills.

This type of training is more general but no less helpful. Here, we can talk about courses aimed at learning or improving a language, for example. Or others, whose purpose is to improve or reinforce academic knowledge, such as writing and spelling.

Knowledge oriented to the best performance in the work occupation:

As I have already mentioned, knowledge is a work tool. And, the more tools you have and mastered well, the better job performance will be for the benefit of the person and the organization. For this, there is training aimed precisely at the development of these tools.

They are very specific courses; aimed at addressing any lack of knowledge, deficiency, or improve skills on a specific topic. Computer training is the best example we can mention. To name a few, Microsoft Office courses, such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, are among the most requested. But there are also more specialized subjects, according to their function or work areas, such as construction, accounting, administration, inventories, drawing, audiovisual creation, and a long etcetera.

From here, it will be deduced what it is that hurts the collaborators in terms of knowledge; what deficiencies are there, or what other areas of development can be explored for a more complete formation of them.

Reduce work risks:

The prevention of occupational hazards is an obligation of every employer towards his collaborators. The decrease or absence of these creates a more harmonious, motivating, and productive work environment for the entire workforce, by feeling more secure. For this, there are training courses such as Occupational Safety and Hygiene, Civil Protection and Prevention.

These courses allow guiding and training, both managerial and operational personnel, on the guidelines to follow in order not only to avoid work accidents but also to implement the safety measures conducive to prevent them and to know what to do in cases of sinister. On the other hand, it should be mentioned that having recurring accidents in an organization is very expensive. On the one hand, the fines and increase in the work risk premium are applied by the authority. On the other, the moral damage both to the workers and to the prestige of the company.

Improvement of productivity, quality, and competitiveness of companies:

To contribute to this objective, companies will precisely have to implement all the necessary actions related to the three aspects described above, in a comprehensive action plan. Encouraging the development of employees, having the opportunity to access specialized training, and reducing work risks will undoubtedly improve the long-awaited productivity and increase the quality of work. By increasing, precisely, the quality of the work, the company becomes more competitive and creates reputation, that is to say, "Brand". Working in a prestigious company, in turn, motivates, with pride, its members to improve and productivity, forming a virtuous circle.

In conclusion, I have to mention what many have said before: that training is not an expense, but an investment. And the productivity and success of companies or organizations depend on it.
